No one is surprised at the overabundance of weight loss diet programs to choose from. Celebrity-type diets, cleansing diets and claims to lose weight fast saturate the internet and fill magazines month after month while numerous authors of books offer new options regularly. It’s no help when a sister, a neighbor, best friend or the acquaintance at the gym delivers their free advice and opinions. If you’ve become overwhelmed, join the crowd. No one will argue the fact that it’s a daunting task, and no one will argue the fact that it’s an individual choice and one that can be time consuming. We can also recognize that healthy foods can look and taste delicious!

Finding the right food plan or diet approach demands your undivided attention and for some it turns into trial and error. Often overlooked is the the varying levels of motivation, failed reward system, and the need for non-judgmental and sometimes physical support. Never discount the mental preparation, and listening to CD’s for relaxation and affirmation is much advised. Reading a motivational or self-help book for at least 10 or 15 minutes a day serves not just as a diversion, instead it improves focus and reminds you of your goals.
Oh, did we say goals? We suggest you first make a list five (5) benefits of weight loss–how you (not another) will benefit. Next begin to identify only short term goals. (There’s time for long-term goals later on.) It is suggested that you identify and write down just two(2) goals for the first week, ones that relate only to your mental preparation. If you set a goal for your first week of simply reading the first two chapters in the book of your choice, you’ll then begin to see the importance of mental preparation.
A second goal could be that of taking an inventory of your kitchen. Clear your kitchen of foods you’ve used as emotional crutches, your friend, your best enjoyment in life. If certain foods are necessary for other family members, perhaps you could designate a certain shelf or closet of cabinet for those. If these are foods you enjoy and find tempting, perhaps a new location would limit the frequency in which you see or have to even think about them.
